Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter dead at 76 after losing battle with prostate cancer

Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the boxer who was wrongly convicted of a triple murder in 1966 but spent two decades in jail died on Sunday after a long battle with prostate cancer.

The news was first reported by the Globe and Mail.

Carter’s imprisonment gained greater attention thanks to a 1975 song by Bob Dylan that focused on his plight.

Following his release from prison in 1985, he moved to Toronto and served as the executive director of the Association of the Defense of the Wrongly Convicted.

The Hurricane, a 1999 film directed by Norman Jewison and starring Denzel Washington, helped bring his story to a new generation.
